The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) rescued 14 Indian crew members of the bulk carrier JSW Raigad stranded off the coast of Alibaug, Maharashtra at around 0930 hrs on 26 July 2024. The ICG Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Mumbai received the distress call from the ship at 1327 hrs on 25 July 2024.
The 122-metre long ship, with 14 Indian crew members on board, ran aground on rocks about 01 nautical mile off Alibaug. It reported dragging anchor, flooding in the engine room and loss of control. In the backdrop of extremely rough sea conditions off the Maharashtra coast and the presence of rocks in the area, rescue by air was the only practical option.
Accordingly, the ICG launched rescue operations on the morning of 26 July 2024. Braving adverse weather conditions, the Coast Guard helicopter successfully rescued all 14 crew members from the bulk carrier. The crew members were landed safely at Alibaug beach with no injuries reported.
ICG Station Murud Janjira is currently coordinating with local authorities to provide further medical and other assistance to the sailors. The situation is being closely monitored to ensure safety of the vessel and the surrounding environment.
