The national flag hoisted in 1947 is a testimony to the overall struggle at the Fort St George Museum in Chennai


An old Indian national flag, which was hoisted at Fort St George on August 15, 1947, is on display at the Fort Museum in Chennai. It is one of the priceless assets of the museum located in the centuries-old Fort St George area of Chennai.

The 12 feet long and 8 feet wide flag is preserved in the Fort St George Museum in Chennai. This priceless national treasure of ours is one of the first flags hoisted on August 15, 1947. It is made of pure silk and measures about 3.50 metres in length and 2.40 metres in width. This flag was hoisted at Fort St George at 5.30 am on August 15, 1947. The Indian Independence Gallery in the museum also displays the evolution of the Indian flag and the stories behind the tricolour.
